Start All Over
The cultural artifact I decided to pick was the show One Tree Hill, now I didn’t necessarily watch it while growing up because I was pretty young when this show started (2004) and I would have not understood it quite as I do now. In the show, there is this character named Brooke Davis, who is the basic popular cheerleader that everyone loves and hates at the same time. During the third season of the show, the main characters are preparing for college applications and the show displayed the many feelings each person goes through during this important time. Although Brooke, who encountered a great high school experience is not ready to let that go because she is going to have to have to start all over which I related with her. At that time when I saw this show, I had recently graduated from high school and I was having a hard time letting go of that environment, and was not ready to step into adulthood. While everyone was so eager of college, I was not that I ended up rejecting all the colleges that I had gotten accepted into. I felt so out of place because all my friends had an idea of what they wanted to study and well I did not and ended up taking a year off. Like Brooke, I thought I was not ready for this big step and was scared of being a failure and disappointing my parents, which I did by not attending College. In the time that I took off, I learned that it is okay to be scared of change, we just have to figure out how to overcome it. Also, I managed to get an idea of what I wanted to study but was still scared if it was the right choice. Then, with time that slowly changed and felt very confident of getting back to school and caring on with life studying for Business Administration emphasis in Marketing. Looking at this cultural artifact more vigilantly, I know the message of this particular episode was honest and it did try to capture the same emotions many of its viewers were experiencing or had experienced when they were applying for colleges. Overall this show was great and it helped me get through the situation I was in and I would definitely recommend this show.
