Blog 1: Gender

Prompt 1: Bretman Rock, is a young youtuber who became famous for his artist skills in makeup, that have given him the opportunity to launch his own collection with high brand makeup companies. As you can see he is not your common male figure, since he does not represent the gender binary to which states that males are masculine. Since, Brentaman is associated with makeup and his sexuality is homsexual, he does fit the proper representation of what being a male is in our society.

Prompt 2: In our society Bretman, as a male individual, has shown his gender expression differently from what his gender should naturally express. He is not your typical male figure who likes sports, women, or the other traditional things that “all men” are supposed to enjoy. Although, that does not make him more of a woman and less of a man, he is simply bending the rules, the gender roles to be exact which contradict the natural ways of behaving like a man. According to our perfect, balanced world, no men should be associated with anything that is supposed to be precisely for the females, such as a makeup or anything in relation with fashion because then you are automaticity suspected of being gay. Even though Bretman is gay, there are other male makeup artist who are not but are considered because they do not follow the male life standards that clarify your gender.

Prompt 3: This representation of gender in pop culture has not necessarily impacted into my gender identity because it is the same as the gender assignment I was given. Although, it has made me more open minded about my gender role to which does not need to follow the traditional ways of acting like a women. I simply do not agree to living the lifestyle in which we females are to live just to please the men. Even though it seems we have past that era it still manages to live through in this generation which is sad to hear because we have the equal opportunities as men to prospore, we no longer have to be satisfied with being just another household maid.

Prompt 4:Through the use of Wendy Griswold's cultural diamond the culture object is Bretman Rock. The social world would be the Global Men lifestyle, to which he does not follow the traditional role. The creators are other inspiring men who have come out and accepted that this is their real gender identity which is technically the gay community in general. The receivers are the individuals who have not come out and expressed their true gender identity which could be either female or males, it can also be homophobes who do not accept that idea of gender identity and wish it would stop.

  1. Hi Vanessa! He cracks me up sometimes! I like watching his videos on Youtube. I actually saw him at Ala Moana shopping center in Hawaii, but I didn't know him at the time, so I was wondering why people were taking pics of him.
I agree with you, especially the stereotype of gay men. He is like the definition of how a gay looks, acts, and talks like (at least to me). Legally, we can dress and act however we want, but socially, we are not really allowed. Instead, we have to follow the rules of gender binary: masculine or feminine, otherwise like you said, we are suspected and questioned. But, someone like Bretman inspires people who are suffering from the gender norm. He is also a successful person who owns a house at such a young age! He definitely gives a hope to young adults.

  2. Hi Vanessa,
I love Bretman Rock, I've seen many of his YouTube videos. One of the things that I love about him is that he embraces his femininity as a male. He is not afraid to show it to the world. He is someone that resides outside of gender binary being that he is a gay male who is feminine. He enjoys things like fashion and makeup which are seen as things applying to the female society. He has no shame in enjoying feminine things which is awesome because he is able to be his true self. Most of society would say he is going against the tradition of what it means to be a male. He chooses to express himself in a feminine way even though he isn't a female because that is what appeals to him and that what feels natural to him. Biologically he may identify as a male, but he doesn't let that define who he is as a person.

  3. Hi Vanessa! I think Bretman Rock is a great influencer. His open expression and portrayal of who he truly is, an openly gay male who enjoys typical "feminine" products, serves as an inspiration for other young males in his audience. With more male youtubers like him, i think our society standards for men are slowly changing. Growing up I don't remember really seeing men portrayed like this, it was mostly in the stereotypical masculine way. Its important that the social norms for men can be bent in the way that they want, whether its in the traditional manner or in a more feminine way. His freedom in expression is definitely inspirational because he's like a role model for the young audience he has and is creating an accepting community.

  4. Hi Vanessa!

I have never watched any of Bretman's videos but he sounds like a great example of someone who is challenging traditional gender roles within our society. As you said, as someone who identifies as male, it is expected for him to be into traditionally masculine things like sports in our society, however, I believe that him challenging that expectation is great for him, and other people who will witness him because he shows our society that not following gender norms is totally okay and acceptable. I also really appreciate what you said about how society would just automatically assume he was gay because he enjoyed more feminine activities, and as you point out, even though he is gay, that stereotype brings up another gender rule or expectation for gay men. I think it is incredibly important for our society to understand that liking feminine things, does not make one gay and that gender expression has no relation to sexuality. This is also seen in the lesbian community where people expect lesbians to be butch or more masculine, when in reality, they could look however they want because no matter if they choose to express their femininity or masculinity, that doesn't impact at all what gender they are attracted to.

  5. Hi Vanessa!
I love watching Bretman's videos and think it is great to see more male figures in the beauty industry. Men are often shamed if they are in the makeup industry but I think having youtubers like MannyMua and Bretman in the public eye is helping society become more accepting. They are role models to other young boys or girls to be more accepting of themselves despite what others will say. Thank you for sharing!
